Reevaluating Priorities: From Colorado Mountains to New York Homecoming

The Excitement of Relocation: A Fresh Start in Colorado

The allure of Colorado’s natural beauty and outdoor adventures beckoned to the author and her husband, prompting their move from Brooklyn to Denver in May 2019. Drawn by the promise of sunny weather and recreational opportunities, they embraced the prospect of a vibrant city lifestyle amidst scenic mountain landscapes. With new jobs secured and relocation expenses covered, they embarked on their Rocky Mountain journey, renting an apartment in Denver’s Lower Highlands neighborhood.

Embracing Mountain Living: Challenges and Realizations

Their aspirations for homeownership led them to Evergreen, a picturesque mountain town near Denver, where they found a charming yet aging house that fit their budget. However, the idyllic image of mountain living soon clashed with the reality of increased maintenance demands and isolation. The initial allure of spacious landscapes gave way to the practical challenges of yard work, renovations, and limited access to amenities.

Struggling with Isolation and Logistics

As they settled into their mountain abode, logistical challenges compounded their sense of isolation. Simple tasks like grocery shopping became arduous endeavors, requiring lengthy drives and strenuous uphill treks with provisions. The distance from friends and family, coupled with limited transportation options and unpredictable weather, exacerbated feelings of loneliness and disconnection.

Reevaluating Priorities: Family and Convenience

The arrival of their son further underscored the importance of proximity to family and a supportive community. Faced with mounting housework and the absence of a robust support system, they began to reassess their priorities. Their desire for convenience and a more accessible urban environment outweighed their affinity for mountain solitude.

Lessons Learned: Finding Contentment in New York

After four years in Colorado, the couple made the bittersweet decision to return to New York, seeking the familiarity of home and the embrace of loved ones. While their time in Colorado presented challenges, it also served as a valuable learning experience, guiding their decision-making process for their next home. The author reflects on the journey with gratitude, acknowledging the lessons gleaned from their temporary sojourn in the mountains.

Finding Peace in the Present

Despite initial misgivings, the author and her husband have found contentment in their current living situation. Their new home strikes a balance between convenience and comfort, offering proximity to urban conveniences and a sense of community. While they cherish memories of their time in Colorado, they embrace the lessons learned and look forward to the future with optimism and gratitude.
