Old Water Tower Residence by Bham Design Studio
Bham Design Studio undertook the renovation of a 30-meter high water tower, previously in service until 1990, transforming it into a modern living space located in the Belgian village of Steenokkerzeel.
The exterior restoration of the tower aimed to return it to its original state. Repair work included fixing damaged concrete columns, replacing brick joints, and enlarging windows in the top floor. Preserving existing concrete elements such as the main water conduct, concrete ceilings, stairs, and the 250,000-liter water basin was crucial to maintaining the building’s strong identity.
Internally, visible concrete elements received a coat of dark grey paint to distinguish between the old and the new. This deliberate choice accentuates the contrast between light and dark, enhancing the visual impact of both aspects of the design.
