Krämeracker Primary School: Fostering Learning Spaces
The Krämeracker Primary School, designed by Boltshauser Architekten, marks an expansion of the existing Krämeracker secondary school complex, introducing two new buildings and additional outdoor areas. Situated parallel to the secondary school building, the elongated school structure welcomes students through its main entrance, while the new gymnasium stands opposite the existing gymnasiums, forming a chessboard-like arrangement of building volumes that define various outdoor spaces.
Thoughtful Spatial Organization
At the head of the school building, common areas such as a spacious foyer, library, special rooms, and teachers’ quarters create a welcoming environment. The elongated section of the building accommodates kindergartens and an after-school care center on the ground floor, with classroom clusters on the upper floors. The flexible design allows for different configurations of classroom spaces using folding walls, promoting adaptability to evolving educational needs.
Architectural Expression and Sustainability
The facades of both the school building and the gymnasium reflect a rational, grid-like structure, incorporating concrete elements, lime plaster surfaces, grid stones, and windows. Passive construction measures ensure sustainability, with prefabricated concrete columns and earthen plaster walls regulating humidity and improving indoor air quality. Regional materials, including lime plaster and specially developed terracotta elements, contribute to the ecological footprint of the buildings.
Integration of Art and Architecture
As part of an Art and Architecture project, mosaics inspired by natural stone patterns adorn the floors, adding aesthetic value to the interior spaces. Hand-formed glass rods, crafted near Murano, create atmospheric lighting effects in foyers and stairwells, enhancing the overall ambiance despite the use of LED lighting. These artistic elements, alongside acoustic stones used in the interior, enrich the sensory experience of the school environment.
The Krämeracker Primary School stands as a testament to thoughtful design, sustainability, and artistic expression, providing a conducive learning environment for students and educators alike.
