Putin’s Crackdown on War Critics: Seizing Money and Property
Vladimir Putin is taking harsh measures against critics of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Recently, the Russian president approved a bill allowing authorities to confiscate the money, assets, and property of individuals convicted of “spreading fake news about Russia’s armed forces and committing crimes against national security,” as reported by TASS state news agency.
The law targets assets acquired through illegal means or used for activities deemed detrimental to Russia’s national security, according to TASS.
Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of Russia’s lower house, justified the move as a means to punish “traitors” who tarnish the country’s reputation and undermine its military. He emphasized the intention to revoke any honors bestowed upon such individuals and seize their assets, money, and valuables, as per the Associated Press.
This law supplements another passed in March 2022, which imposes prison sentences and fines on individuals disseminating “fake news” about the Russian military.
Reports indicate that several individuals in Russia have already faced imprisonment for criticizing the war in Ukraine, with some opting to flee the country, leaving their assets behind, which are now targeted by the Kremlin.
As Russia approaches the third year of the conflict in Ukraine, and with Putin seeking a fifth term in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for March, the 71-year-old leader is widely expected to secure victory over his three opponents.
